First a bit of a preface, there was a recent link on Reddit that basically said most
Americans are woefully prepared for retirement. Let’s be honest, we’re all guilty
of buying stuff that was made overseas. In fact, one really can’t avoid it.
I am amazed at the complete and utter disregard for this issue when it comes
to elections. Reddit user “Sadist” is succinct in his comments about why some
can’t afford to retire.
“What the numbers tell you is that people need some fucking money. If job A
that lets you retire does not exist or has been shipped overseas, there no
amount of fucking guidance or analysts or what have you that will let them
Their only option is to work after retirement or move to a country where living
costs are 1/3rd of what they spend now.
I honestly can’t imagine how anyone in the service industry can hope to retire if
they don’t own a house. People will just be forced to crime and homelessness.”
And there you have it. It’s short simple and to the point. And it’s true. Our
current trajectory was set way before the economic meltdown, however our
access to cheap credit kept things moving. The music stopped when the
economic crisis hit.
It bothers the shit out of me when I see seniors working service sector jobs,
because corporations try to allude is that they’re bored in retirement, and
wouldn’t it be fun to come eat shit in retail and get yourself out of the house.
We know this isn’t the truth.
In a just world everybody would have a certain standard of living, but that’s just
not the case. We’ve all seen documentaries or news stories about people living
in squalor in other parts of the world. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think
our turn is coming.
We have allowed corporations to continue to outsource without any kind of
tariffs in place, decimating our manufacturing base. It’s so easy to set up shop
overseas with relaxed labour & environmental laws.
The infuriating thing, is that most companies know how bad it is for people
seeking employment, and rather than let their employees keep their dignity and
provide acceptable working conditions, they drive the knife in even further by
abusing their employees.
Don’t like the job? No problem, there’s 10 people waiting in line for it.
The difference between North America and China, is that there are some limits
set forth by law as to how bad a company can treat an employee or how much
air/water you pollute.
